The Ausbildung search visa can give an eligible person up to nine months in Germany to find a vocational training place. A longer stay is not a substitute for preparation. The strongest use of the period is a focused search supported by documents, German ability and realistic role selection.

Before you travel: define the target

Start with the training occupations you are prepared to pursue. The official Make it in Germany job listings include vocational training vacancies and can be filtered by sector. Read each vacancy carefully: location, start date, training provider, language expectations and application documents can differ.

The official FAQ notes that vocational training often starts in August or September and advises applicants to apply well in advance. Do not assume every vacancy follows the same timetable.

Build an application pack that can be checked

Keep a current CV, school-leaving documents, German-language certificate, passport, and any translations or recognition records that the role or authority requires. Match dates and names across documents. Where an employer asks for a cover letter, tailor it to the actual occupation instead of reusing a generic explanation.

The visa route itself requires B1 German. That threshold does not mean every employer or vocational school will treat B1 as sufficient for every occupation. Read the vacancy and ask the provider what evidence it needs.

Use work and trial permissions carefully

The official route permits secondary employment of up to 20 hours per week and trial work of up to two weeks. A job trial must stay within the permitted purpose. It can help you understand a workplace and let an employer assess fit, but it is not a promise of a training contract.

Keep written details of a trial: employer, role, dates, contact person and intended outcome. If an employer offers a training place, check the next immigration step promptly rather than assuming the existing search permission covers the training.

When you find a place

The visa for taking up vocational training is a separate route. You need to follow the responsible authority’s process for the confirmed in-company or school-based place. Do this before the search permission ends.
